FAQs

  • Below are the details for commissioning wall works, floors, sculptures, swimming pools etc, but we also work on restorations, public events, team-made mosaic murals and more. The best way to find out whether we can do something and how that might work is simply to get in touch with us.

Because we treat every project in a bespoke fashion, the process reflects the service you want. The standard commission process is made of five phases

    Consult
    Quote
    Design
    Fabricate
    Install

We can do any combination of these phases as packages. For example, you may have your own artwork you want made into a framed mosaic, or you might work with an install company to install a swimming pool that we fabricate.

  • After you have been in touch with a rough outline of your project and what you want to achieve, we will organise a brief consultation. This is normally a simple phone call, a site visit or a few emails. Through conversation we will work out how best to serve your idea. The more information we have at this stage the better, as it feeds into the way we plan the rest of the process, so we normally come well prepared with questions and advise that you do the same.

If you would like us to design the work we will go through your tastes, show you examples of materials, talk through what to expect and explain how differences in the design or materiality might affect lead times and price. (In broad strokes, marble has to be imported from abroad so adds time and cost relative to ceramic or glass tiles, and the simpler your design the cheaper it is).

After this conversation, when we have some parameters, we work on a quote. We can give you different pricing options if requested. We also outline an expected schedule, tell you when we expect to need your sign-offs, and inform you of where bottlenecks could arise.

At this point we ask for 50% of the fee upfront to buy materials. Once we have received this fee, we start to move through the steps that we have outlined to you. Once the design is signed off, you may not hear much from us as fabrication can take quite a while. As we get towards the end of the work we will send pictures and be back in touch to confirm or amend the install dates. If we are installing we will go through what we can expect, and what we require.

  • A very long time! Depending of the urgency of your project, we can assemble larger or smaller teams but you should allow at least 2 months for the fabrication of anything over 1 metre squared, and add a week for design and a week for install. This 2 and a half month timescale stays the same for projects up to 5 metres squared, but anything larger will take longer.

Anything considerable such as a swimming pool or a large floor would need a minimum of 6 months but ideally a year.

Ultimately, it is very important that you get in touch as early as possible. Often the waiting list is longer than the production.

  • For a large scale mosaic, a baseline to keep in mind is £3000 per square metre. This is for a comprehensive package incorporating consultation, design, quoting, fabrication and install onto a provided substrate. This price rises depending on the specific project, according to material choices, design complexity, lead-time, location and any additions like workshops and visits. Using marble will be at least double due to the cost of the materials and the added complexity in handling them.

We often guide our clients through a value-engineering process if initial proposals stretch beyond their budget.

  • We are based in London in the UK and can work across the country. If you aren’t local we may need to charge a small fee for a site visit. For non-local installs it often works out better if we recommend a local installer.

We can and do work internationally but accommodation and a per diem will need to be organised for our team. As a solution we have done several international commissions from the UK, shipping mosaics abroad.

  • We can organise this for an extra fee

  • We aim to get as much information from the client as possible through consultation and use this to make a draft (between a5 and a2 depending on complexity) for feedback. We then revise the design according to this feedback. Once this is signed off we draw the piece up to scale.

As standard, we offer one revision free of charge. If you think you will need more we can prearrange a fee for further design work.

  • Of course! We will need to see an image and talk to you about what is possible, the more intricate your design the more difficult it will be. However, we often revise designs for mosaic.

  • Because there is such a wide range of possibilities in mosaic, we have found that offering an initial consultation for free benefits us all in terms of giving shape to an idea. Most of the time we find we do not need more than a quality conversation and a site visit to put together a draft design.

However, if a project is very large or complicated, we will request a fee for further consultation sessions. This is the most economical way for us to plan a large project, as we work out how our specific requirements meet those of our client. For example, fitting into larger building projects or how many design phases the project requires.
